4pm - school, members of the soft tennis club. These tennis balls are really squishy and apparently are to blame for Japan's poor performance at professional tennis.

4pm - Kintetsu department store Yokkaichi, these are plastic models of the special Osechi ryori that is eaten on New Years day which can be ordered in advance. The "Japan at a Glance" guide explains that "Many of the delicacies inside are named in hopes for the family's health and prosperity." Unfortunately because it is very much a family event we haven't had the chance to enjoy these delicious looking boxes.

1pm - cooking room at school, the teachers involved in tomorrows race held a zensai party. This snack is made by putting grilled mochi (rice cake) in a sweet red bean soup. It is an acquired taste, I have tried in many times but today was the first time I really enjoyed it. Red and white are auspicious colours, so perhaps we ate it today for good luck ??
